Solving the Puzzle: Understanding Hoarding

Encountering a hoarding situation in a housing unit can be like solving a puzzle. Finding the right pieces to match, knowing where to place them and seeing the bigger picture through all of it can be a daunting task. Greg Smith has over 16 years’ experience dealing with hoarding situations on a professional and personal level. By sharing his experiences as a municipal inspector and family member of a hoarder Greg will help solve the ever-changing puzzle that is hoarding.

This course will give you tools to:

  • Understand the complexity of hoarding, causes and symptoms of the disorder and hoarding behaviors
  • Identify hoarding situations and the dangers they may cause to the resident and others
  • Deal with a resident displaying hoarding behaviors including examples of language to use and other resources
  • Identify best practices for clean-up of the unit and resources to help

Greg is an experienced educator with a demonstrated history of working in the public safety industry for 22 years. His work experiences include Park Ranger, Park Ranger Supervisor, Correctional Officer, Code Enforcement Officer and Housing Inspector in Arizona, California and Minnesota.

As a trainer and professional presenter for government, public and private sector groups Greg provides expert subject matter on topics including code enforcement, housing inspections, and policy and procedures.

Greg is a certified Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector through the American Association of Code Enforcement and the International Code Council, a Certified Situation Awareness Specialist (SAS) and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in The Administration of Criminal Justice from the University of Phoenix.

Greg’s training experiences include Academy Instructor for the City of Phoenix Park Ranger Academy, Field Training Officer/Supervisor for the Cities of Phoenix and Mesa Arizona, and Loss Prevention Supervisor for the JCPenney Company.
