Substandard Housing: How to Document, Provide Proper Notice and Allow Reasonable Time for Owner to Abate

This session will focus on the process of preparing a Notice and Order to Abate. The discussion will cover the importance of the contents of this Notice and how it becomes crucial to a City’s future enforcement plan for substandard properties. Attendees will learn the intersection between this Notice and the initiation of legal action about the substandard property’s owner. The session will cover the legal requirements of reasonable notice to an owner based on varying factual circumstances. Attendees will review case studies related to the cooperation between multiple city departments, including the city attorney, in order to properly document property conditions.
