SB 296 Signed Into Law

Thursday, October 7, 2021   (3 Comments)

On behalf of CACEO, our Board of Directors and our Legislative Committee, I am very proud to announce that Governor Newsom just signed CACEO’s Code Enforcement Officer Safety bill, SB 296, into law!

This bill requires, for the first time ever, all cities and counties to adopt safety standards specific to code enforcement officers and the hazards and threats they face in their respective jurisdictions.  To our knowledge, this law is the first of its kind in the nation, and it is our hope that every other State will adopt similar legislation in order to enhance protections for code enforcement officers.

We are extremely thankful to the CACEO membership, which responded overwhelmingly to our “calls to action” and contacting their legislators, sent in letters of support, and called in to hearings.  This was a long, sometimes very challenging road, but we are so grateful for such wide support.

We extend an especially heartfelt thank you to Senator Monique Limon and her staff, who carried this bill and ensured its success.

This bill is going to save lives – both of code enforcement officers and those they protect in the communities they serve.  There remains much work to be done to further enhance safety and the profession in general, but this was a momentous step in the right direction.

I have never been more proud to be a code enforcement professional.

Matt Silver, Esq., CCEO
CACEO 2nd VP and Legislative Director
