A Message From The President

Friday, January 15, 2021

Happy New Year and welcome to our 15th year as The California Association of Code Enforcement Officers!

I hope this message finds you and your loved ones healthy and safe. As an organization and as individuals, we faced, and continue to face, many trials and tribulations at work and at home.  I would like to thank you all for your continued support through what was our most challenging year to date.  Your Board  and Executive Management Team are back from the holidays and working on many new and ongoing projects.  Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we were unable to meet for our annual planning session.  However, rest assured that we are on course for another successful year, no matter what hurdles we come up against!  Here are a few highlights of what is going on behind the scenes on your behalf as we kick-off 2021.

CACEO recently released a statement to the membership and various news media outlets about increased violence against CEOs, which has resulted in several requests from major television and radio networks for interviews.  I spoke with two major radio stations in the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento and Region 1 Director Pete Lemos spoke to ABC10 television and  iHeart Radio in Sacramento. We have at least three other interviews pending in Southern and Northern California.  The SF Bay Area and Sacramento reports were very well done.  They both highlighted and clearly sent the message that threats and violence against CEOs are on the rise overall and especially amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.  Our next step is to engage city and county leaders in a discussion on the topic and how to collaboratively address it.  We will also be reaching out with our message to The California League of Cities, The California State Association of Counties and our State Legislators in Sacramento.

We also released a statement to the membership that will be sent to the California Department of Public Health, Health Officers Association of California and to all county health officers in the state requesting early access for CEOs to Covid-19 vaccinations.  CACEO has also requested to be a part of the California Vaccination Advisory Committee (CVAC).   This state committee is composed of many organizations from across the state as an advisory board on the distribution of the Covid-19 vaccination.  Given the environments CEOs work in and that many CEOs are now first responders to Covid-19 complaints, we felt that we could provide valuable insight into the Covid-19 needs of the communities in which we work. Many thanks to CACEO Secretary Carrie Rios for bringing the CVAC opportunity to our association.

First Vice President and Education Chair Amanda Ahrens and her committee are working diligently on coordinating continuing education webinars.  The Education Committee plans on having a schedule of available classes through early Summer on the CACEO website in February so members can plan ahead and take advantage of any remaining training budget funds for FY 20-21.  As soon as Covid-19 restrictions allow, we will begin scheduling in-person classes.  Until then, CACEO will continue to provide new and innovative classes to meet your training and professional growth needs.

I am also very excited to report that the Education Committee is working on getting the very first CCEO Module 1 Certification class ONLINE during the first two weeks of March.  The first class is already filled and we are looking into future dates for additional classes. This will provide unprecedented access to all members, reduce financial burdens on budgets and help simplify the logistics of presenting these classes.  Plans are also being made for Modules 2 and 3 for later this year as well as for getting the Substitute Service Certification Exam online for those who qualify to bypass the Certification Modules.

In closing, there is no arguing the fact that 2020 was a difficult year in many ways.  However, due to hard work and dedication there were several positives that came our way as an association.  We had a very successful annual seminar, our education program made great strides and we made important allies for our ongoing legislation and education efforts.  I challenge you all to look back at 2020 to find the positives, big or small, and keep a positive outlook as you move forward rather than dwell on the negative. I am honored again to serve as your President and to lead our organization into another new year.  CACEO is doing and will continue to do great things to meet the needs of our membership and promote our profession.  Thank you again for your continued support as we embark on our 15th year as a leading organization in the field of Code Enforcement.  Together, I am certain that we will make 2021 another exciting and memorable year for The California Association of Code Enforcement Officers!

Sincerely,

Darrell Revier, CCEO
