| Fellow members, I hope this message finds you all healthy and safe as we continue to live, work and play during the trying times of COVID-19. I am reaching out to highlight some of the important items your CACEO Board of Directors has been working on with our executive management company, The Core Management Company, to continue supporting the needs of the membership. Our Legislative Committee headed by 2nd Vice President Matthew Silver of Silver and Wright LLP, has been working side by side with John Lovell, our outstanding and dedicated lobbyist, to keep several of our bills alive during a period when the State Legislature is focusing primarily on COVID-19 and law enforcement defunding bills. Although our bills have been tabled, they have been kept alive by your CACEO representatives in hopes they will be heard as soon as the legislature resumes regular hearings. We will be ready for when they do resume and will need everyone's support in order to be victorious. CACEO successfully partnered with our fellow organizations to defeat the potentially disastrous AB 362 which would have permitted the opening of government funded "safe injection sites" in our communities. This bill would have allowed IV drug users to gather in a "safe" location to use their drug of choice with no medical or public safety personnel on site to administer aid in the event of a medical emergency or to prevent the commission of various crimes associated with drug use. Safe injection sites previously established in other cities and countries failed miserably and had devastating impacts on the surrounding communities. CACEO recognized the potential danger and partnered with the California Narcotics Officers Association and the Congress of Racial Equality to protect our communities from falling victim to this harmful legislation. CACEO stepped up locally to help protect the jobs of several of our brethren and emphasize the importance of our profession by writing and submitting letters of support to city and county leadership resulting in the retention of code enforcement programs and jobs. Letters submitted to the City Council of California City earlier this year played a key role in their decision not to eliminate the city's code enforcement program which saved the livelihoods of at least two code enforcement officers who are also CACEO members. Just this week, CACEO helped save the job of a Santa Cruz County Code Compliance Officer and CACEO member by submitting a letter of support to his board of supervisors urging them to reconsider eliminating his position. Our letter in conjunction with his testimony convinced the board of supervisors to vote 5-0 to retain the position and therefore save his job. These are not only two prime examples of the influence and importance of our association, but also shining examples of what your CACEO Board and fellow members do to support each other in good times and bad. CACEO will continue our unwavering support and dedication to the membership and to the profession in the face of economic uncertainty and political movements to defund law enforcement and quasi-law enforcement programs. The Webinar Committee led by Director Johnny Terfehr from the City of Eastvale, continues to administer the CACEO Webinar Program with overwhelming success! Johnny and his team produced the first ever CACEO webinar three months ahead of schedule and below budget. This effort has made CACEO continuing education classes available in an economical and easily accessible format to every one of our over 1,600 members for the first time ever. Non-members also now have access to our high quality and relevant training. This program has helped members still attain the CEUs and off-set financial shortfalls in our Education Program due to the impacts of COVID-19.Visit our website at https://www.caceo.us/events/event_list.asp for information on upcoming class offerings. Our Seminar Committee led by Director Carrie Rios from the City of Downey, has risen to the challenge of converting our popular annual training seminar from face-to-face to the virtual world! This year's seminar will be held throughout the month of October on Thursdays rather than in three straight days to allow for even more members and non-members to attend from the comfort and safety of their homes or offices. The seminar will feature many other "firsts" for CACEO of which you can read about and register for by visiting the CACEO website at: https://www.caceo.us/mpage/2020ConferenceHome. Last and certainly not least, the CACEO Board election process for regional representatives is underway. Keep your eyes open for your official nominee ballot in your email box from Election Committee Chairperson Tracy Robertshaw of the City of Visalia and be sure to vote for your region's nominees! This year I will hold the inaugural "Nominee Orientation Meeting" along with Tracy Robertshaw and Will Hixson, CACEO's Executive Director. The session is open to all nominees and is designed to answer questions to give first time nominees a better perspective on what to expect and what will be expected of them if elected to our board. I am hopeful that attendees will benefit from this meeting, which will continue in future years to better prepare nominees for service to their fellow members and the profession. I encourage you all to participate in our various surveys and make use of the new Member Forum on our newly redesigned website: https://www.caceo.us/forums/ to get information, ideas and input from your fellow members. You will need to first sign into your membership account to access the forum. Please never hesitate to contact your regional representatives or me directly if you have questions or concerns. CACEO staff is available to you via telephone at 916-492-2223 or at https://www.caceo.us/. We welcome and value all feedback to ensure we are aware of your needs which helps us to best address them and support you. Please be safe, be kind to and take care of one-another and I hope to "see" you all at our Annual Seminar this October! In solidarity, |
