Board Code of Ethics
Share |

The members of the California Association of Code Enforcement Officers (CACEO) are entitled to have fair, ethical, accountable and integrity-driven representation. Board members must be able and capable of properly representing the best interest of the members and the profession throughout the state. The strong desire of the Board of Directors to fulfill this mission therefore requires an adoption of a Code of Ethics to assure the full confidence of its members and the effectiveness of the organization.

  1. Recognizing that stewardship of the member’s interest must be the primary concern. Board members will work for the common good of the membership and not for any private or personal interest, and they will assure fair and equal treatment of all persons, activities and transactions that come before the Board of Directors.
  2. Board members shall comply with the laws of the nation, the State of California and the CACEO policies and procedures while serving as a member of the Board of Directors.
  3. The professional and personal conduct of Board members must be above reproach and avoid even the appearance of impropriety or unlawful conduct.
  4. Board members shall perform their duties in accordance with the processes and rules of order established and adopted by the Board of Directors and Roberts Rules of Order in governing the deliberation of policy and activities on behalf of CACEO and its members.
  5. Board members shall prepare themselves for all issues pertaining to CACEO business, including Board of Directors meetings. They shall listen courteously and attentively to all discussions before the Board and focus on the business at hand. They shall refrain from interrupting other speakers, making personal comments not germane to the business of the Board or otherwise interfering with the orderly conduct of the meetings. They shall base their decisions on the merits and substance of the matter at hand.
  6. In order to assure their independence and impartiality on behalf of the common good, Board members shall not use their official positions to influence decisions both before the Board and for personal gain outside CACEO activities.
  7. Board members shall respect the confidentiality of information concerning CACEO business, personnel issues and any proceedings before the Board of Directors. They shall not disclose confidential information without proper authority from the Board of Directors; nor shall they use the information to advance their personal interests or bypass the appropriate organizational chain-of-command or direction from the Board.
  8. Board members shall not use CACEO resources such as funding resources, equipment, supplies, facilities, contractually approved vendors or consultants for private or personal purposes or gain. They shall not use the CACEO name, logo or any materials of CACEO for personal, private or political use and may only use those items for official, approved CACEO business.
  9. Board members shall represent the official CACEO policies or positions of the Board of Directors once a final decision has been made and shall not engage in negative or disparaging activities against such decision or policy once it has been approved by the Board of Directors.
  10. Board members shall adhere to the Board Member-Executive Director form of governance. In this structure, the Board of Directors determines the policies of CACEO. Under the oversight of the officers, the executive director shall carry out these policies and activities on behalf of CACEO.
