CACEO Certification
Letter from the Education Chair
March 2009
This is an exciting year for code enforcement education. The energy that is being expended by members of CACEO’s Education Committee is really remarkable. We are focusing on five areas of the education program. All of the 160 hours of Academy instruction are being updated and standardized. The number of the locations offering the code enforcement academy is being expanded with the addition of two new college campuses. Additionally we are offering the certification examination in a variety of locations throughout the state. We have also produced a how-to-do-it reference and Sourceguide, which will soon be available for purchase. Created by experts in code enforcement management, this 300-page Sourceguide serves not only as a study guide for the certification exam but also as a reference text.
CACEO realizes that within the membership there are varying levels of education and experience. Currently we are offering three levels of training at college academies. The colleges offering the curriculum are American River College, Sacramento; College of the Sequoias, Visalia; Rio Hondo College, Whittier; and Rancho Santiago College, Orange. To insure uniformility in presentation, the Education Committee is creating new PowerPoint presentations that include code updates, new topics and instructional media. The updating process should be completed this summer. The Committee is also working on the development of a curriculum that would provide a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration with a Certificate in Code Enforcement. Due to the wide range of disciplines contained in the profession of Code Enforcement, completion of this project is about two years away.
For experienced officers we are offering three levels of the certification examination: Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced. Each examination follows the college curriculum. Currently, we have four locations where the examinations are being offered this year click here, but can add more if interest demands. If you know of several co-workers that would like to take the exam, you can contact the CACEO office to see what can be arranged. To be cost effective we need provide exams for 10 to 15 people.
